Writing Prompt on Play

from upcoming book Creative Awakening: Journal and Workbook

  • What creative tools did you love to play with as a child?

i.e.; chalk on the sidewalk, making huts with leaves and rocks, legos, poster paint, mud, flower chains, making clothes for my dolls, goofing around on the piano, making sand structures, constructing forts with wood, etc.

  • Describe the way playing with them made you feel.

i.e.; lost track of time, felt fanciful and free, imaginative, relaxed, good, happy, etc.

  • Are there tools with which you are curious about playing with/exploring now?

i.e.; pen and ink, furniture, knitting, clay, plants, paint, etc.

Are there similarities in interests between your curiosities as a child and now?  i.e.; mud is like clay, Barbies clothes to grown-up clothes design, etc.

  • Are there similarities between the ages? Do you have any conclusions about your life-long interests/curiosities/leanings?

i.e; I must like molding things with my hands, I must feel happy/creative when I’m playing with plants, my creativity at its best is when I’m in the kitchen creating food, my creativity is clearly with using color, I have always loved fabric and creating things to wear.

  • If you knew you could not do it wrong, nobody could judge you, and you could feel the same playfulness you felt as a child, would you pursue this interest now?

  • Would there be anything that would get in the way or stop you?
